Our Story

We welcomed our little girl Maya Rose in 2017. Once she started walking at 10-months old, she got into everything, even the tray on our end table, where we kept our sunglasses. I, being an optometrist firmly believe in sun protection, so have multiple sunglasses everywhere.

I watched Maya model the various pairs of adult sunglasses over and over again during the next few months, and the joy she had was indescribable. When we went outside on strolls or car rides, I noticed her squinting or covering her face. I realized it was time for her to wear sunglasses, especially when she pointed to my sunglasses on my face and said “want pretty glasses.”

Two different people had gifted her some “sunglasses”, but on close inspection, there was no indication of UV protection and they were not made very well.  I decided it was time to invest in a better pair of sunglasses for Maya. Unfortunately, a nice pair of branded UV protection sunglasses costed nearly $100. I felt that this was a little too much for Maya, who would break and lose the sunglasses within seconds.

As I researched a little more, it was amazing to me that compared to all the adult sunglasses options out there, children had very few options.

Fast forwarding to Spring/Summer 2020, the optometry practice I worked for closed down due to the pandemic and I was home with Maya full-time with schools and daycares also being closed.

During this time, I started again to think about the lack of children’s sunglasses options. I started researching what it would take to start a children’s sunglass line, and I decided to take the plunge and start my own children’s sunglass line.

As an optometrist, the idea of starting a business always scared me but I convinced myself that I must try and that life is too short and unpredictable, as the pandemic was teaching us in 2020. I am definitely learning as I go, making mistakes as I go, but that is life.

I put my heart and soul into Maya Rose LLC , and I hope your little ones feel pretty, inspired, and protected to take on the world with their new eyewear, and with a new perspective.
